In a shock news item in the UK today an association of TV and newspaper companies have decided to jointly fund a judicial review of the findings of various inquests into Princess Diana's death.
Commenting on Authearth a spokesperson for the new group (provisionally named the "RNIFW" Media Fund) said:
"We are astonished that despite there being no real evidence proving that there was not foul play an extremely costly and wasteful process looks like it will be closed. We have a duty to our shareholders to ensure that we report news that people want to read or watch. If the decision of the latest costly enquiry, suggesting that there is no evidence of foul play, is not challenged then this would set a damaging precedent and might also annoy the public into wondering why so much time and effort has been spent on this issue. The burden of proof for media agencies must not be that an item is factually correct but that we can run a story until someone can prove that the story is not really a story at all. We therefore wish to start a new lengthy and costly review which will enable us to continue to report to our shareholders (and audience) on news items we know they like."
The ARN (Association for Real News) responded:
"We think that this latest attempt to continue a non-story is shameless. Surely the money and legal system could be put to better use. Perhaps one or two journalists could be trained to find news that affects people, investigate the story and publish their finding. We know that this is a horribly old fashioned approach but we think there could be a real human benefit."
Watch this space. This news item could run and run!
